The traditional name for Mangaia is A'ua'u Enua. A'ua'u means “terraced island” in the Cook Islands language, and it is a fitting name for this beautiful island. Mangaia is surrounded by a ring of high cliffs that are made of fossil coral and creates a series of terraces that lead down to the sea. Mangaia is one of our most unique islands in the Cook Islands, so full of surprises in its formation and landscape. I love the reef, the caves and the uruatete, the lake, and the middle part of the island known as the Kainga where people plant their crops and taro. One of the surprises I saw after our reefwalking experience with my travelling buddies was the freshwater coming out from underground and flowing into the sea.
