The ‘Dawning of the Day’ or ‘Fáinne Geal an Lae’ is a traditional Irish air believed to have been composed by the 17th-century Sligo harpist Thomas Connellan. Irish language lyrics were added by an unknown author and the Irish and English words were included in Edward Walsh’s 1847 work, Irish Popular Songs. It was also published in Patrick Weston Joyce’s Ancient Irish Music in 1873.
