A couple whose garage roof was torn off during Storm Goretti have described the moment as sounding like a "sardine tin being opened". Storm winds reached 90mph (145kmph) on Thursday night causing damage to at least 110 trees, saw about 100 roads closed and led to 50 people being evacuated out of their homes.
The pair of midweek storm systems delivered a one-two punch, with the colder second wave system bringing widespread rain, lower snow levels and hazardous travel conditions, especially across the northern and eastern regions.
After a brief pause, the La Niña winter weather pattern is back, which will bring the return of cooler across the Northern Tier. The threat of an East Coast storm is growing for late next week that will bring impactful snow and rain to the region.
Just under 4,000 homes are still without power in Shropshire, after the snow caused damage to lines overnight. Earlier today, that number was more than 10,000. In some cases, such as here in Coalbrookdale, the lines were brought down by branches, heavy with snow.
