Heavy snow, ice and brutal cold are expected to make this winter storm a potentially life-threatening weather event, stretching across two-thirds of the U.S.
The National Weather Service calls the system "a significant long-duration winter storm," which is expected to bring heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain from the southern Rockies to New England. The storm will last into Monday across much of the U.S. and into Tuesday in the Northeast, the NWS said.
Winter weather brought hazardous driving conditions, multiple crashes and heightened emergency responses across the Mid-Ohio Valley on Friday, as local officials urged residents to stay off the roads and road crews worked to keep up with snow and ice control.
The Jersey Shore is finally coming out of the grip of the deep freeze, but expect the snowpack to stick around a little bit longer.
A snow and ice weather warning is in place for the whole of the North of England as an "Arctic maritime air mass" brings with it freezing temperatures. The North East is set for another overnight dusting of snow, with a Met Office weather warning in place for areas across the North East.
"We have a very experienced crew, and we know when we have the thaws after the storms, that potholes are expected," said Ron Snyder, spokesman for Baltimore County Department of Public Works.
Snow and ice left on a vehicle can block visibility and break loose at highway speeds, putting other drivers at risk. Several states have specific “snow/ice removal" laws, while others rely on broader equipment and visibility rules.
