A high-stakes governors race in New Jersey, one of two gubernatorial contests on Tuesday, has tightened in the runup to Election Day. Democrats' pick, former Navy helicopter pilot Rep. Mikie Sherrill, still maintains her lead over Republican Jack Ciattarelli in his third try for the governor's mansion.

Voters across the country are heading to the polls today for a slew of key off-cycle races, including governor's races in New Jersey and Virginia and the New York City mayoral election.

The gubernatorial contest in this historically blue state could be the sleeper, if there is one, this Election Day.

Ciattarelli and Sherrill have also spent time campaigning in South Jersey, an area that saw voters in Gloucester, Cumberland and Atlantic counties overwhelmingly back Murphy in 2017. However, they swung heavily toward Ciattarelli four years later.

The tight governor's race between Sherrill and Ciattarelli is the first to benefit from major voting reforms that could prevent the overnight suspense of previous elections.
